Nevertheless, dental implants do not suit everyone because implanting devices should attach to the jawbone, so you should be healthy before implant surgery.

Different Types of Dental Implants

There are two main categories of dental implants, namely:

Endosteal Dental Implants

Endosteal dental implants are the most commonly used and consist of three different parts:

The implant, which the dentist inserts into the patient’s jawbone to secure it firmly.
An abutment connecting the dental implant to the artificial tooth and
The artificial tooth, also known as a prosthetic.

These implants allow our oral surgeons and dentists to correct problematic mouth and tooth structures with long-lasting solutions and provide pain-free smiles during the procedure. They are an alternative to removable dentures and bridgework.

Subperiosteal Dental Implants

A subperiosteal implant holds an artificial tooth or teeth when a patient does not have an adequate, healthy jawbone to support the conventional dental implant. Unlike an implant positioned directly into a patient’s jawbone, subperiosteal implants are fixed over the bone and beneath your gum tissue.

The subperiosteal implant comprises a metal frame that fits the patient’s jawbone and gum tissue. The metal frame is placed on the bone and kept in place with tiny metal anchors that penetrate through the patient’s gum and into the bone. While the gum tissue heals, it holds onto the metal frame and helps secure it in position.

Once the subperiosteal implant is securely fixed to the jawbone, we can place artificial teeth on metal poles. Depending on your needs and preferences, these teeth could be permanent or removable.

Surgery Duration and Healing Timeline

A dental implant medical procedure happens in several stages that can take up to nine months. You will consult many dental experts, including an oral surgeon and a periodontist, before the conclusion of your treatment.

Dental Evaluation

The initial step involves our dentists assessing your gums, teeth, and jawbone. The rationale of the appointment is to ascertain whether your jawbone is healthy enough to preserve the implant.

We can recommend bone grafting or other medical procedures before placing your implants if the jawbone is soft or tooth-thin. Your gums should also be periodontal disease-free.

Implant surgery is mainly an outpatient process. It can be conducted using IV sedation, local anesthesia, or general anesthesia. Our dental specialists should inform you of the anesthesia they will administer.

Implant Placement

Regarding an endosteal dental implant placement:

Your surgeon will make an incision on your gums, uncovering the jawbone below.
Holes will then be formed into your bone at the location where the dental implant will be fixed.
If you settle for a removable denture, it could be attached to the hole for aesthetic reasons until we place your dental implant.

If your implant is subperiosteal, we will not drill your jawbone. Instead, we will attach the implant to or over the bone.

Regardless of the type of dental implant you choose, you should expect to experience some swelling and discomfort after the surgery. It can last for a couple of days. You can resume your daily routine a day after this dental procedure.

Osseointegration Stage

Following the implant placement, it takes about six months before adequate bone growth takes place around the screws. The process is called osseointegration, which translates to integrating with the jawbone.

In osseointegration, the jawbone will regenerate and strengthen around the implant, keeping it securely in position so that it functions as the artificial tooth's root.

Placing an Abutment

A metallic extender, or abutment, is generally added to the dental implant. We consider it a minor procedure and use local anesthesia.

The purpose of abutments is to connect an artificial tooth to an implant.

After fixing the abutment on the second visit, our oral surgeon will cut your gum tissue to confirm whether it has grown over the implant due to a healing cap being placed over it. The healing cap protects the dental implant and keeps tissue from overgrowing over it.

In the subsequent procedure, we will remove your healing cap and screw the abutment onto the implant. The gum tissue will curve around the abutment.

After the abutment placement, your gums will require a couple of weeks to heal.

Tooth Placement

Once you are healed, our skilled dentists will take your tooth impression to ensure your permanent teeth fit. They can be permanent or removable.

If you settle on a removable tooth, we will mount it on a metallic frame and fix it to the abutment. You should remove and clean the tooth daily at home.

If you select a permanent fix, we will screw or cement it to the abutment.

Once the procedure is complete, inform your qualified dentist of any discomfort in your mouth or when you experience one of the following:

Bleeding.
Severe pain.
Swelling.
Uncomfortable or uneven bite.
Ongoing discomfort.

Your artificial teeth will feel and look natural.

Care for them as you do with your natural teeth: floss daily, brush twice daily, avoid using your teeth as tools, drink a lot of water, and visit your dentist regularly.

Finally, ensure you schedule regular dental appointments for checkups.

Preparing for Your Dental Implant Surgery

While placing a dental implant is a life-changing treatment, effective planning for the procedure will ensure a successful and smooth outcome. The Day of Your Procedure

Here are the guidelines to follow on your dental procedure day:

Beverages and foods — If your dentist will administer local anesthesia, eat a light meal hours before the treatment. If you are having intravenous sedation, you should avoid eating after midnight the night before your surgery. It ensures the stomach is empty.
Medication — Your dentist can prescribe antibiotics to take days before the procedure to prevent implant failures. They can also advise you to rinse your mouth with anti-bacterial mouthwash.
Clothes — Wear loose-fitting and comfortable clothing. Avoid clothes with buttons or tight collars that could result in discomfort during the surgery. Do not carry watches, contact lenses, or jewelry to the dental office.
Brush your teeth normally. However, avoid using toothpaste with strong flavors.
